Obama Determined to Control the internet

The Obama administration refuses to take no for an answer in its desire to control the Internet.

Last month, the U.S. Court of Appeals Court for the District of Columbia delivered a unanimous and unambiguous repudiation of the Federal Communications Commission’s attempt to dictate how a cable company should run its business as an Internet-service provider. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski responded last week by proposing a “third way” around the court decision: He will redefine the Internet as if it were a telephone.

The FCC, a New Deal relic, derives its current authority from the Telecommunications Act of 1996. At the time the law was enacted, Congress wisely decided to take a hands-off approach to the Internet by creating a new “information service” category explicitly designed to remain free from the tangle of red tape that the agency layers on top of telephone service, cable, broadcast television and radio.

Mr. Genachowski, however, is upset that this plain reading of the statute deprives him of the authority to “safeguard privacy,” “empower consumers” and “lower the costs of investment.” He seeks to remedy this by imposing new rules on the Internet’s network infrastructure. In a rather Orwellian fashion, he claims these regulations would not involve regulating the Internet itself. Mr. Genachowski insists that he has no intention of meddling with online content.

Even if that’s true, his proposal remains deeply troubling. If a federal agency is allowed to ignore court rulings and erase laws with which it disagrees, there would be no restraint on what a future chairman might do. Surely, if the federal government can provide a “good reason” to reclassify broadband services as telecommunications, it can come up with a “good reason” to prevent such bad language on the Internet or even extend its reclassifications to cover cable television programs on HBO and Showtime.

Absent legal constraints, the agency could even resurrect the Fairness Doctrine and apply it to the Internet. This rule, created during the 1940s, required that broadcast stations give equal time to both sides of controversial issues, but it had the unintended consequence of discouraging stations from discussing anything controversial. The scheme was ultimately canceled by President Reagan’s FCC in 1987, a move that ushered in a revival of talk radio.

Neither President Obama nor his appointees have the authority to unilaterally rewrite the law when it suits their convenience. If Mr. Obama wants to impose controls on the Internet, he must go to Congress and ask for the new power – a request not likely to be granted. Members of Congress and the general public appreciate that the Internet’s greatness lies in its unregulated, Wild West nature. As the FCC opens its proposals to public comment, we hope that readers deliver the clear message that federal “help” is neither needed nor desired online.

RAW: The New Patriot Act:

RAW: The New Patriot Act

It seems that everytime there is a “incident” that causes public concern, our elected leaders take that incident and turn it into a free-for-all to establish more invasive technologies and polices that make it easier for them to gathering intelligence on us.

Throughout the last fifty years, various law enforcement agencies were prevented in using these surpetious technologies to spy on Americans. But, our Congress and Senate had balls during those times, and informed those same agencies that spying on Americans without probable cause was a big No-No…

Now, in the wake of the various “terrorist” incidents occuring around the country, and the all to prevelant mass-hysteria at official levesl that the upcoming “American Insurrection” is at hand—these ageneices have been given the green light to do just about anything that they want..

First and foremost in my opinion are the following trends that will ultimatley lead America into a likely Orvillian “1984” style scenario:

National Identification Card:

Panel calls for national ID vetting standards:

The Identity Theft Prevention and Identity Management Standards Panel (IDSP) released a report calling for the development of an American National Standard on identity verification as a tool to help combat terrorism and identity theft. The report calls for national standards to verify the identity of individuals before being issued identification documents.”

The synopsis states that; The report cites benefits of identity verification guidelines to include reducing waste, fraud, and abuse in government programs; limiting underage access to alcohol, tobacco, or other age-limited products and services; and reducing or eliminating criminals’ ability to evade law enforcement through the use of fraudulent identities. They will also enhance the security and credibility of government and commercial credentials issued downstream, such as public and private-sector employment identification cards, U.S. passports, Medicare/Medicaid cards, and credit/charge cards”.

Huh? What A Crock Of Bullshit!

“limiting underage access to alcohol and cigarettes” I thought that most vendors these days abided by a very strict “Show Me Your ID” policy at the cash register when purchasing cigarettes or Beer. I know that even at my age, I am repeatedly being asked for my ID card—of course I also promptly tell them to go straight to hell immediatley after they ask…

 Here’s a novel idea in motion already…

 New driver license legislation proposed:

“Some believe that new proposed driver license legislation would help states better secure IDs while also protecting citizen privacy. Others say it “guts” an existing law and takes states back to pre-9/11 identity vetting for IDs.

A hearing held in the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on the proposed bill called the Providing Additional Security in States’ Identification (PASS) Act of 2009. Testimony revealed very different takes on the bill that would basically roll back, REAL ID. It’s not clear how the proposed change would impact states already complying with REAL ID and rolling out new documents. Even with this new bill looming, some states are still moving ahead to comply with REAL ID.”

DOD official: U.S. needs identity czar:

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Robert Lentz said a national leader is needed for reducing problems with anonymity on the Net

BLACK HAT USA — LAS VEGAS — A top Defense Department official today called for a second national cybersecurity czar dedicated to handling problems and risks associated with anonymity on the Internet.

Robert Lentz, who is the deputy assistant secretary of defense for cyber, identity, and information assurance in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense as well as the chief information assurance officer for DoD, in his keynote address here at Black Hat USA told attendees here that identity is at the heart of securing the Internet.

“In my opinion, there needs to be a cyberczar just for identity. Without that, we’re going to be done,” said Lentz, who said reducing anonymity is key to ensuring security and resiliency on the Net. He noted that reducing anonymity also will generate debate over “legitimate privacy concerns,” too.

“We need a national leader focused on this important topic, which is without a doubt a foundation for this fragile ecosystem,” he said.

The Obama administration plans to name an overall cybersecurity czar, but has not yet announced who that will be.

Lentz said the DoD’s public key infrastructure (PKI), one of the largest in the world, is not easy to use. “One of our greatest challenges is and continues to be that it’s still not easy to use,” he says. “We have to continue to embrace that technology and help others deal with identity assurance and drive anonymity out of the Net as much as possible.”

Other areas that need work, he said, are directory services and the integration of physical and logical security. “Directory services has been our Achilles heel since I’ve been here,” he said. “We need to clean up directory content.”

And authentication could be used to help unite physical and logical security, he said. Lentz said a good example of the rift here is that he has his PKI-based CAC card for computer access, but he needs a separate badge to get into the Pentagon. “And we need multi-factor authentication: we’re ready to turn the corner in biometrics and we need to leverage it for both logical and physical access,” he said.

“We need to deploy risk-based access control and the ability to authenticate ourselves to the Net [and in] the cloud,” he said.

And educating the public about secure Internet practices is also crucial to ensuring the infrastructure is sound and resilient. It will require a culture change, he says, and a campaign akin to the “green” movement for security. “We need to have a culture change like with the green movement but focusing on cybersecurity,” he says. “I think having a ‘cyber-green’ movement is something we can all rally around.”

The eyes have it:

“When talking about biometric technologies the list typically goes fingerprint and then iris, in that order.

Fingerprint biometrics have been the standard because it has been around longer and have a proven track record. But advances in iris technology along with new vendors and products may signal that the technology is about to take off.”

FBI using facial recognition to find fugitives:

“The FBI is searching driver license databases using facial recognition technology, according to an Associated Press news report.

In North Carolina the technology was used to catch a double-murder suspect. The FBI learned the suspect was in North Carolina, took a 1991 booking photo and then compared it with 30 million photos stored by the motor vehicle agency. The search returned a dozen or so results and from there the suspect was identified and a week later he was arrested.

The ACLU has concerns over how the information is being used and the mission creep with drive licenses, said Christopher Calabrese, an attorney who focuses on privacy issues at the ACLU. “Now you need them to open a bank account. You need them to be identified everywhere. And suddenly they’re becoming the de facto law enforcement database.”

The FBI has set up a group to set standards on how driver license photos can be used in criminal cases. “

What we are witnessing with these new laws and proposals plays directly into the hands of the much touted US Census intelligence operation.

Let’s look at this another way:

a) Suppose that the government had the name of every person in the USA, and ALL of their personal information…

b)  Each of these people are required to have the National identification Card, and the Biometric Social Security card, as well as the Biometric Passport Document…

c)  You identity credentials MUST BE checked and verified every time that you;

Apply for employment with a potential employer

Every time that you use your credit card

Before you are allowed to travel using the public transportation system

Before you are allowed to purchase anything from the internet

Then my friend, we will have truly entered a new era of government surveillance.

The Sleeping Russian Bear Awakens:

The Threats Against America

Russia has become alarmingly active in the last few years, at least ever since Putin took office. His domestic and foreign policies are chilling when one analyses them from outside the spectrum Of Perestroika as we have been lead to believe.

What is frightening is the simple fact that very few, if any, of the media giants in America are reporting these stories-at least without adding some biased commentary that assures us that everything will be alright.

Since Putin came into power, his policies have been very aggressive in nature. A certain aggressiveness that is directed wholly and fundamentally at the United States.

For example, in 1999 Reuters published a headline: “Russian Premier Vows to rebuild Military Might.”

Putin delivers a speech declaring that “ the government has undertaken to rebuild and strengthen the military might of the state to respond to the new geopolitical realities, both external and internal threats.”

Putin then expounded on the fact that the alleged threats originated in Russia southern frontiers, and also announced a 57 percent increase in military spending

He was quoted saying: “Our country Russia was a great, powerful, strong state, and it is clear that this is not possible if we do not have a strong armed forces, powerful armed forces.”

In January Putin ordered the largest maneuver of Russian nuclear forces in twenty years, scrambling strategic bombers, launching cruise missiles, test-firing ballistic missiles, and sending new spy satellites into orbit, in what was being called  “an imitation of a nuclear attack on the United States.”  These aggressive overtures should make Americas leadership sit up a little straighter and take notice of the quintessential  threats facing our country by this rogue militaristic madmen that controls a nuclear armed regime.

I have watched with growing concern the ever increasing policies flowing out of Moscow. Policies that flagrantly thumb the collective soviet noses at America—and appear to be a direct intervention into the ‘somewhat” peaceful arena surrounding the  American-Soviet era of cooperation and peace.

I am of the opinion that Russia is preparing its forces, drawing the proverbial “line in the sand”; and gathering unto itself those countries that are hostile to American interests abroad. Adding to this alarming trend is the well documented fact that Putin is going out of his way to equip, train, and provide arms to rogue Islamic nations such as Iran, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, and other countries that have an openly hostile view of America—should tell everyone in our nation’s capitol that something is going on inside of the Soviet Union.

 Russia’s biggest military threats

“Despite the decrease in the possibility of unleashing a large-scale aggression using conventional arms and nuclear weapons against the Russian Federation, military threats to the Russian Federation have increased in a number of areas,” reads the document.

According to the new doctrine, Russia views the expansion of NATO as a primary threat to its security, as well as part of a tendency to give NATO global security functions.

Another threat mentioned is the deployment of the strategic missile defense system that undermines international stability and violates the established balance of forces, arms deployment in space and the creation of new high-precision conventional weapons are also listed as threats in the doctrine.”

“First of all, we never know how the world will look like in 10 years. Secondly, even now there are several states that claim part of Russia’s territory to be their national territory – for instance, Japan. Also, the border hasn’t been demarked with some of Russia’s neighbors, so we cannot exclude that some international alliance [ Read American and Coalition Forces ] can use armed forces against Russia and it will have to defend itself.”

Russia’s possible response

The new doctrine stipulates Russia’s right to use its armed forces beyond its borders “for the purpose of the protection of the interests of the Russian Federation and its citizens, as well as the maintenance of international peace and security.”

One of the more frightening scenarios that comes to my mind is the Russian-Chinese alliance. I am firm in my believe that this alliance serves “no other purpose” than as a geopolitical move that hinges on the upcoming crisis that involves Taiwan—as US protected ally.

For years China has been warning America that if the US Military intervenes in the China-Taiwan  reunification process—there would be severe consequences. A move that I believe will involve the Soviet military machine as well.

 Consider this scenario:

China launches a preemptive missile strike at Taiwan defense shield, while simultaneously invading the Island with Marine forces and para-troop units.  America has a vested interest in Taiwan, and would once again send the US Navy into the region.

Russia could then realistically send her troops to provide” a security balance” in the region, thereby assuring that America cannot interfere with the Chinese conquest of Taiwan—or risk facing a thermonuclear war on two fronts.

It’s the old shell game, but played with conventional and nuclear weapons…
